ANDREW Westgarth's career as player-manager of Falmouth Town got off to a decent start as he scored in their Dave Gardner Trophy clash with Helston Athletic.

The Ambers travelled to the Kellaway Park, which is nearing the completion of renovation work ahead of the Blues' South West Peninsula League Premier debut, for their opening tie of the competition.

They are due to meet again at the ground on March 25 in the league and if Saturday's game is to go by, it should be a close encounter.

Westgarth started his first match in charge of Town on the pitch against the team who employed his services last season and capped off his performance with a goal before half time.

A header from Chris Wormington, signed from Porthleven earlier this month, gave the visitors a 2-1 lead at the break, with Athletic getting on the scoresheet through a Phil Cattran strike.

However, the competition's defending champions earned themselves a point as Ashley Stidwell popped up with an equaliser in the second half.

Tomorrow night the Blues travelled to Gala Parc for a derby with Porthleven, kicking-off at 7.30pm, with the Mayor's Cup also being played for.

The Fishermen started their trophy campaign in fantastic style as they thumped six past Penzance at Penlee Park on Friday night.

A big impression was made in particular by new signing Ryan Trathen, who made the move to Port from the Magpies, as he scored twice.

Other strikes came from Kyle Fraser, Matt Best, Luke Hunter and George Molcher as the side managed by Phil Kellow, who was also making a return to his former employers, ran out 6-1 victors.

Falmouth host Penzance on Wednesday with the match kicking-off at 7.30pm.

On Sunday, the final two games of the competition will be played at Penlee Park with Falmouth v Porthleven at 2pm and Penzance v Helston starting three hours later.
