FALMOUTH Town player-manager Andrew Westgarth said picking up the Dave Gardner Trophy has helped install the "winning mentality" in the squad.

The Ambers lifted the cup on Sunday after topping the table of the annual pre-season competition played between them, Helston Athletic, Porthleven and Penzance.

Having earned a win and a draw in their opening two games, Town defeated Port 2-0 in the final group match at Penlee Park.

This meant Athletic, who were having to field their reserve side due to the first team being involved in the Charity Vase in Holsworthy, had to win in order to retain the title.

However, they came unstuck as host club Penzance won 3-1, handing Town the trophy.

With the South West Peninsula League season starting on Saturday, Westgarth said the success at the tournament will be beneficial for the Ambers.

Westgarth said: "Obviously with it being pre-season, everyone goes out on the pitch with different expectations.

"But getting a win and some silverware is always nice and it will help build a winning mentality at the club.

"You have to get to a stage where winning becomes a habit as it creates a positive mindset which gives players confidence in themselves."

Town managed to get past the Fishermen on Sunday in a game which was not filled with many memorable moments.

Both sides looked lacklustre and it took 70 minutes for the deadlock to be broken by Rob Wearne, who had earlier missed a penalty.

Mike Vanes rounded the result off with ten minutes to go and this would prove be enough to win the trophy following Athletic's defeat.

"I'm really pleased with how we played," Westgarth said.

"We had a few of the younger players missing because they had work commitments, but we kept our shape well.

"We could have been more clinical in front of goal, but that was the only slight disappointment."
