RETAINING the Ron Curnow Memorial Trophy title has provided a welcome boost to Mullion Reserves' preparations for 2015/16 - according to manager Dan Higgins, writes Athena Chrysanthou.

The team kept hold of the cup after defeating Lizard Argyle 1-0 in Saturday's final as Chris Ensinck converted a spot-kick in the clash at Clifden Parc.

It was the fourth year the competition was held in memory of Rob Curnow, who was a popular figure at football clubs around the Lizard peninsula.

With their season in Trelawny League Division One commencing on August 22, Higgins said he was pleased with the result and believes it will give them confidence going into the campaign.

Higgins said: "We have gone from strength to strength in recent seasons and it’s a great platform to get promoted.

"We only lost two games in the league last year, so overall we are feeling pretty confident."

As the upcoming season nears, Higgins has signed two strikers and a defender to add to the depth of the existing team, with the aim of scoring more goals and adding experience.

He hopes the new recruits to the squad will also help develop some of the younger players and raise their play to the next level.

"We have never struggled in defence and have kept the majority of the same players," he explained.

"But being able to score more goals will definitely help in future games.

"Bringing in more experienced players will help us towards our goal of getting promoted in the upcoming season."

In the third place play-off played before the final, Wendron United Reserves and St Keverne drew 2-2 to set-up a penalty shoot-out.

Dron kept their nerve better in the tense finale of the match to bag the bronze medal.

Prizes were presented on the day by relatives of Curnow, with Mullion chairman Chris Rosevear saying how delighted the club are to host the tournament.

Rosevear said: "I am very proud that the club were again asked to host this annual event in celebration of the work Ron did for Mullion FC and football locally.

"It was fantastic that members of the family were able to come along and present the trophy."

Earlier in the week, Mullion beat St Keverne in their semi final 2-0 before Argyle won 4-3 on penalties against Dron, after the game ended 0-0.
