A DUO of Falmouth cricketers have said they are "excited" about featuring for Cornwall in the Unicorns Trophy Final today.

All-rounders Christian Purchase and Antony Angove have been selected in the county side who will take on Northumberland at Wormsley Cricket Club in Buckinghamshire, with play due to start in the 50 overs game at 11am.

Weather forecasts predict a damp day for the players, but both the representatives from Falmouth said spirits remain high in the Cornish camp.

It is the first time the team has progressed to the final, having previously only reached the semi final once in 2005 when they lost to Wiltshire, and Purchase told the Packet he is confident the county can do something special.

The 21-year-old said: "I wouldn't be playing for the team if I did not think we could win in the final.

"We know Northumberland have some quality players in their squad, but it is nice for Cornwall to make the final as it proves we also have some quality cricketers.

"Having the experience of guys like Tom Sharp has helped us out and our overseas player Brad [Wadlan] have been a great addition as well.

"There is a real family atmosphere in the squad with a lot of proud and caring people in the changing room and I think it all bodes well for the final."

Following a string of solid performances at Trescobeas Lane, which has seen him score 252 runs and pick up 30 wickets, Angove said he is delighted with how his first season in the county set-up is going.

He added winning the Trophy final would be a remarkable achievement to cap the year off, but the 26-year-old said he is trying to keep calm going into the clash.

Angove said: "I am really looking forward to the game as you don't get to play in too many finals during your career.

"I am not nervous and I don't think the rest of the squad are and having missed out on the County Championship, I think we all want to make amends for that with a good performance in this final.

"It is going to be a great day and I haven't thought about taking the winning wicket or scoring the winning runs myself as I am just trying to focus on my own personal performance as I want to make sure I keep my place in the side next season."

Northumberland have appeared in the final twice before, beating Dorset in 2006 and losing to Berkshire two years earlier.
