A CLUB chairman has criticised Cornwall Cricket League bosses for not doing enough to embrace modern trends in the sport.

Falmouth Cricket Club's David Painter has spoken out at administrators of the game in the Duchy after they unveiled seven proposals linked to structural changes for the 2016 season in a bid to help get more people playing.

These revolve around changes to the tiers of the leagues, wide ball rulings, fixture dates, overs allocations per bowler and how transfers and player registrations are done.

The proposals were compiled during six forums held with clubs around the county over the course of the season and a final vote is set to be taken on implementing them at the AGM on January 16.

However, Painter, who took over as Falmouth's chairman earlier this year, believes CCL bosses have not addressed the real issues which are causing problems.

Painter said: "It's all about what the players want.

"Cricket has changed greatly over the past five years with emphasis on Twenty20 and 50 over games at international and county level.

"The young players want more of the 20 overs with coloured kit and I think we need to respond to this in a positive way.

"In the Premier League, the 50 over Cup is not a success and every season it is a job to get the Final played and I think we could replace it with a T20 competition that finishes with a Finals Day held in July.

"It is time the league moved with the times."

Bosses at Cornwall Cricket have said the proposals have been developed around information received back from players and people can still have their say before the vote is taken.

Their media officer Michael Weeks said: "Clubs will ultimately have their say in the right and proper place which is the reason for such widespread distribution.

"The proposals have come out of the wishes of players attending the six countywide forums.

"The list has been emailed to over 2,000 players individually as well as it is the idea for the clubs to vote knowing the views of their own players, rather then assume."
