HISTORY was made by Cornwall yesterday as they won the Unicorns Trophy for the first time, defeating Northumberland by seven wickets.

Falmouth's Antony Angove put in a man-of-the-match performance for the Duchy as he picked up three wickets for 30 before hitting 43 with the bat to help the county successfully chase down 199 at Wormsley.

Cornwall had never reached the competition's final before and were up against opponents who had two previous appearances under their belt, which included winning the trophy in 2006.

After a rain delay reduced the game from 50 to 42 overs a side, Matt Robins won the toss and inserted Northumberland.

An excellent start was made by Cornwall as they rattled through the first five wickets for just 59, with Angove claiming all three of his scalps.

Former Durham star Gareth Breese restored some order to Northumberland's innings with a half century and a 68 run sixth wicket partnership with Micky Allen, before getting bowled by Neil Ivamy.

Chris Youldon, 38, and Sean Tinsdale, 24, chipped in with some useful runs towards the end as the northerners found their way to 199-9.

Robins was joined by Matt Rowe to start of Cornwall's reply and a positive start was made with 36 runs being smacked in the first five overs before a run out saw the latter returning to the crease.

This brought Angove to the crease and so begun an innings which saw him tick the scoreboard over with Robins and, after Breese got the Cornish skipper out, Tom Sharp.

The 26-year-old's innings lasted 46 balls, featuring four fours, and by the time he was caught out, the scoreboard read 132-3 with 21.3 overs left.

Overseas star Brad Wadlan joined Sharp in the middle and the duo completed the job with a 71 run partnership, taking 55 balls to wrap proceedings up.

Sharp finished on 41 and Wadlan spanked three fours and same amount of sixes in his knock 36, leaving the 12.2 overs untouched.
