PENRYN Athletic's disappointing start to the season continued on Saturday as they only managed a draw at home to Wadebridge Town.

Luke Brabyn's early strike was cancelled out by Adam Paterson on the half hour mark as Athletic were made to pay dawdling on the ball and not taking their chances.

With just four points out of a possible 12 from the start of their South West Peninsula League West campaign, Athletic who have their eyes on winning the title find themselves in 12th place in the table.

They will feel at least three points were for the taking on Saturday against a Wadebridge side who were mediocre at best.

It looked like it would be a much happier afternoon for Athletic compared to their previous two, which both ended in defeat, as Brabyn continued his fine form upfront with his third goal in as many games.

His latest strike came in the sixth minute at Kernick Road after he cut in from the right and struck a well-hit shot past 18-year-old goalkeeper Dan Peters.

From here it should have been a formality for Athletic and Sean Johnson and Ryan Reeve squandered good chances for the hosts.

However, with 30 minutes gone, Ryan Martt was caught on the ball by James Oakley, leading him to set up Paterson who proceeded to send a shot past Chris Symons at his near post.

Athletic looked to get an immediate response in and they thought their chance had come just before half time when Scott Palmer was taken down from behind by Andrew Sincock in the area, but no penalty was awarded.

Reeve thought he had put Athletic back in the lead, only to see Peters pull an excellent double save to deny him, springing into life after blocking the first shot to push the striker's rebounded wide.

Throughout the second half, the ball spent large amounts of time inside the visitors' final third, but nothing came of it.

The ball did find the back of the net twice, but on both occasions Athletic players were left despairing as they saw the offside flag raised.

To add to their misery, Reeve came very close to bagging a winner when he got on the ball after Peters had made a save, but his rebound crashed off the post.

On Saturday, Athletic face Penzance at Penlee Park.
