YOUNG members of Gyllyngvase Surf Life-saving Club achieved amazing results over the weekend to be crowned national champions.

The club's Nippers collected the British title as their team of 40 children aged between seven and 13 finished more than 300 points ahead of Woolacoombe.

Clubs from across the country came down to Exmouth for the event with over 600 competitors with each being tested on skills lifeguards use to carry out rescues in the sea.

These include swimming and board races, endurance running and relay events.

Gylly Nippers' coach Matthew Trebilcock said: "Well done to all club members, I’m extremely proud of you all. There were so many excellent performances.

"Thank you to everyone who has helped so much towards this result, all the coaches, the committee and helpers, without you none of this would have been possible."

Club captain Georgia Christophers added it was a fantastic result.

"I’m so proud of all our nippers who showed amazing skills, teamwork and competitiveness," she said.

In the youth competition, open for 13 to 19-year-olds, Gylly finished third overall while the masters team came sixth.
