PENRYN College teacher Mark Lewarne is preparing for the race of his life for the Great Britain Team at the 2015 World Triathlon and Aquathlon Championships in Chicago this week.

Lewarne, who has rounded off the season well by finishing fifth in his category in Budapest two weeks ago, takes part in his fourth world championships and aims to put in a strong performance in the Windy City.

“Budapest was a great prep race, it had everything I needed to be mentally and physically prepared for the world championships,” Mark said.

“I drop back down to sprint distance now which relies more on speed rather then endurance, so I’ve been getting some speed into my legs over the past weeks, and I can honestly say that I am as ready as ever to try and make the top ten again. It’s important to remain focused.”

Lewarne who finished a best ever seventh in Beijing in 2011 and before that twelfth and thirteenth respectively in Israel and Australia is hoping to get back into the top ten again.

“My aim is to make the top 10 and if possible beat my Beijing finish, but Chicago will be tough, a strong field of over 70 of the best athletes from across the world in my age group will be fighting it out to get on that podium.

“Every second is vital, but I couldn’t be more prepared, I’m sure the adrenaline will be pumping come race day so we will just see what happens.”

The sprint triathlon takes place in the city with the swim of 750m within the bay of Lake Michigan and the 20km bike and 5km run around the flat inner city district which promises to be fast and furious.

“I’m expecting a fast race, everything is set up for a very quick time. I will be using all my experience to ensure my limits are pushed to the maximum.”

Mark thanked his sponsors, Maen Karne Aggregates and Penryn College, for all their support. You can follow Mark’s progress in Chicago at www.marklewarne.com.
