CAMBORNE gave a superb all round team performance to secure a deserved first ever away win at Avonmouth’s Barracks Lane ground on Saturday, writes Martin Symons.

The Cherry & Whites gradually got on top in the latter stages of the first half before going up another gear after the break to outscore their hosts by five tries to two, winning 29-23.

Richard Kevern returned at fly-half for Town with Ben Stean switching to full-back whilst the impressive forward pack was unchanged from last weekend’s victory over Bideford.

Though Avonmouth with the slope in their favour lead by 10-0 midway through the opening period, the visitors retaliated when Sam Matavesi’s break created space for outstanding flanker James Goldsworthy to cross with Stean adding the extras

The home side increased their lead with a penalty before the break but soon after the resumption the visiting forwards drove over for Dave Roberts to claim the touchdown.

Trailing only 13-12, the Cherry & Whites got their noses in front on the hour when flanker Matavesi again broke the home defensive line and young replacement wing Harvey Jones did well to bag his first senior try.

Soon after the bonus point score arrived for Town when several waves of attack ended with lock Ben Kemp charging over near the posts and Stean’s regulation kick made the score 24-13.

Next number eight Roberts reacted quickest as Camborne’s forwards pressurised from a close range scrum to get his hand on the ball touching down the fifth visiting try.

Even though the home side came back to score ten points in the closing stages, the Cherry & Whites held on at the death.

On Saturday, Camborne entertain newly promoted Teignmouth, who are still searching for their first win of the season.
