A YOUNG Redruth side show enormous character to hold on for a win on their first visit to Bury St Edmunds, writes Ed Bawden.

In an exciting game, the Reds turned a nine point deficit into a eight point lead before a grandstand finish by a very capable home side.

While Bury could have won the game with the last kick of the game, Chris Lord was wide with a penalty attempt from 45m.

The Reds' forward play was tremendous and everyone put in a shift in defence.

On a clear dry, warm day, Redruth made a good start with Murray Western just off target with a penalty in the opening minutes.

In Bury’s first attack, Kieran Westlake did well to cover a kick ahead on the 22, but picked up a leg injury in doing so, forcing an early end of the game for him.

Shaun Buzza came on to take his place after just eight minutes and a couple of storming runs will have given him confidence.

Tom Cowan-Dickie, playing in the back row with Ben Priddey, was prominent for the reds as Westren stroked over a penalty after 15 minutes.

Bury hit back with two very good tries in quick succession, the first from wing Matt Hema before Lord added his name to the scorers, but was only able to convert one.

Redruth lost Neilson Webber to injury and Westren was not feeling well but stayed composed.

Good play in the front row from Tommy Phillips, Richard Brown and Peter Joyce saw replacement Ashley Hosking kick a penalty from near the posts to make the score 12-6 at the interval.

Immediately after the break, Lord put over a penalty to open up a nine point lead before Redruth raised their game in a 15 minute period.

First from a quickly taken penalty by Priddey near the line, Brown was on hand to dive over for a try converted by Hosking.

Moments later, great team play saw Redruth camp on the line for several minutes before Brett Rule came into the line at full speed and was able to spot a gap in the defence to go over for a converted try.

With 25 minutes to go, Hosking put over a penalty when the home team were offside.

After this, Bury had the better of the game with their backs making a number of line breaks, but the Redruth cover was equal to the task, apart from when good handling created space for Hema to run in his second try.

Sheer determination saw the reds through the last ten minutes when they were under continuous pressure, but with the experience of Chris Fuca, they held on for their third straight win of the campaign.
