IT was Finals Day at Falmouth Golf Club on Saturday and the course was in perfect condition as was the weather, writes Keith Rashleigh.

Each of the finals was keenly contested in the best spirit of the game with the Tidd Trophy was won by Ian “Henry” Churcher.

Matt Roberts and Steve Jones won the Daily Mail Foursomes while the duo of Rob Connolly and Paul Jose collected the Spring Four Ball and Matt Morrison won the McLeod.

Robert Tongue won the Medal Matchplay and Ray A. Clark won the John Shaw Trophy.

The eagerly anticipated Scratch Final scheduled for 36 holes between Ben Browning and Mark Carter certainly kept the gallery entertained as these two excellent players enjoyed their duel in the sun.

They were all square after five holes before young Ben pulled away to hold a three hole advantage at the half way mark.

He increased this to four up before Mark pulled one back, but Ben showed composure beyond his years as he carded birdies at the tenth, 12th and 14th holes before closing the match out with another birdie at the 15th for a win by 5&3.

Earlier in the week, the club had their Ladies' Captain's Day with 42 females taking part in the festivities.

A competition called Yellow Peril was devised for the event with threesomes going round the course and counting their best two Stableford scores.

However, a catch was added to the rules with players having to use a yellow ball on each third tee, with this score being doubled and added to their final total.

Once all the tallies had been brought in, it was the trio of Carol Mitcham, Jo Munday and Lis Thomas who topped the leaderboard with their score of 107.

In second place were Lynne Dickinson, Letitia Rivett-Old and Rose Bailey with a total of 101.

Sally Ingle, the club's ladies captain, served scones halfway round for the players before returning to the clubhouse where a post-competition meal was prepared by the chef.

A putting contest was also held on the day with Theresa Brierly coming out on top, picking up the winner's prize of a bottle of champagne.

After the games were finished, Falmouth's director of golf Steve Burrows presented Ingle with a bouquet of flowers.
