FALMOUTH Eagles return to Cornwall & Devon League action on Saturday with a mouthwatering clash against table-topping Withycombe at the Recreation Ground (2.30pm).

Sporting an unbeaten home record so far, Falmouth have the chance to throw the title race wide open if they are able to turn over the league leaders.

Falmouth chairman Neville Curnow said: "It's going to be an acid test for the players but we want to show that we can rise to that test. We want to give a performance that we know we are capable of and we expect the boys to step up to the plate."

The Devon side have amassed a healthy points difference so far, while Falmouth's is less impressive after they suffered a disastrous 71-0 defeat to Bude in September - their only loss of the campaign so far.

"We've drawn a line under that game. I'm not really sure what went wrong but we're only looking forward. The league is so competitive that we cannot afford to take our foot off the throttle for one minute," said Neville.

"We have to front up and be counted - the boys trained well last week and that was without a game at the weekend, so we expect the same attitude from them this week."

Falmouth should be at full strength barring any injury from Thursday night's training session. If they were to overcome the stiff challenge of Withycombe and other results go their way, they could leapfrog into second spot in the table.
