FALMOUTH Golf Club sailed through to the last eight of the Frank Wills Salver County knockout by overcoming Looe at sunny St Austell by 4 ½. to a ½ on Sunday, writes Keith Rashleigh.
Falmouth, will play China Fleet in the January quarter-final, raced into the lead with top pairing Simon Hirst and Paul Huckle winning 5&4.
This was soon followed up with Paul Martin and Crispen Merritt winning by 6&5. Richie Perrin and George Popperwell then produced the coup de grace with another crunching win by a “Dog Licence” 7&6 which effectively gave Falmouth the three points required to send them through in emphatic style.
Micky Doust and Matt Morrison halved their match with Looe pairing Phil Green and Brian Coombes before Ian Renshaw and Robert Tongue added a fourth point for Falmouth with a battling performance which saw them win 2&1.
Saturday`s Winter League four ball better ball played off 9/10ths handicaps saw George Popperwell and Scott Pedlar card a fantastic 51 points with a good front nine of 24 followed by a stunning back nine of 27 points.
For the second week running Scott was in the winning duo and has now perfected the “anchor role” (last week with Ben Browning who carded seven birdies) and this week with George remarkably emulating Ben`s feat with birdies at the second, third, eighth, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th holes.
Runners up were club captain Pete Brierley alongside Steve Draycott as they returned an impressive 48 points with 23 points on the front nine and 25 on the homeward nine.
Third were Brodie Kemp and Chris Spencer with another good score of 47 points with respective nines of 20 and 27 points.
The Seniors’ (over 55`s) annual meeting attracted a healthy attendance where the newly elected captain is Andy Anderson who took over from Bruce Gilbert who enjoyed an excellent year including winning more matches than was lost.
Andy`s chosen charity is Cancer Research UK. Upon Andy`s suggestion it was also agreed to financially support the junior section.
The Vice Captain is Chris Jobling. Tony Clark continues as treasurer and Ken Arch remains as the fixture secretary.
