Sticker 3, Penryn 2 (aet)

PENRYN were dumped out of the Charity Cup at the first hurdle after a late extra time winner at Burngullow Park on Saturday.

In an absorbing cup tie, the visitors had twice fought back from being a goal behind but Liam Dingle's header two minutes before the end of the added half an hour denied them the chance of a penalty shoot-out.

Steve Jewell's men were far from their best in the first period and were probably fortunate to reach half time just 1-0 down.

That goal came after only eight minutes when Mike Body crossed from the left and Daniel Nancarrow flicked the ball on for Andrew Butler to finish with ease.

A smart turn from Scott Palmer gave him room to warm the hands of home keeper Kai Stone from 20 yards, but Sticker were finding joy attacking Penryn's right flank and the impressive Sam Kenny's cross-shot was deflected harmlessly wide.

The visitors came within inches of an equaliser after 17 minutes when Kevin Lawrence broke through, steadied himself and shot towards Stone's bottom left hand corner. The keeper managed to get just enough on the ball to push it on to the post and the ball rolled agonisingly across the line before Stone recovered to pounce on it.

Frank McEvoy fluffed his lines at the back post when he should have doubled the hosts' advantage, but Penryn began to pass the ball better and the lively David Broglino's effort was parried away by Stone.

Ten minutes before the break Steve Jewell's men restored parity when Lawrence sent Palmer away in the inside right channel and he squared it intelligently for the unmarked Broglino to tap home the equaliser.

Kenny missed a glaring chance to put Sticker back in front before the break when he somehow failed to connect with Body's cross, before Chris Symons made a smart save low to his right to deny Butler his second of the match.

Penryn were dealt a blow at the interval when Broglino, who had been the visitors' brightest attacking threat, was unable to continue with a tight hamstring. He was replaced by Ryan Reeve.

Shortly after the break Jewell switched to four at the back in a bid to stem Sticker's threat from wide areas, but it was in vain when Sticker went ahead again in the 56th minute.

The ever-willing Kenny burst down the left and his cross to the back post was expertly hooked back across goal by Body for the grateful Nancarrow to prod in from a yard.

Penryn were not done though and began to produce their best stuff of the match. Luke Brabyn's turbo diesel engine was running at its most efficiently and the visitors levelled with 20 minutes left.

Lawrence tip-toed his way across the box and his left foot shot took a wicked deflection, wrong-footing Stone and enabling substitute Greg Hobbs to nip in for the third close range finish of the match.

Into extra time and the game became tired, with attacks from either side becoming more sporadic as the huge pitch began to take its toll.

Five minutes into the second period a good interchange between Ryan Chinn and Sean Johnson enabled the latter to hit a blistering left foot shot which Stone turned past his right hand post, before the killer blow arrived seven minutes later.

Penryn had looked defensively vulnerable on the right hand side for much of the match and it ultimately cost them.

Body rolled the ball into the path of substitute Matt Lloyd, who broke down the left and produced an inch-perfect cross for fellow substitute Dingle, who kept his composure to head down past the helpless Symons.

It was rough justice on the visitors, but their hopes of emulating last year's achievement of reaching the final were over.
