Torpoint Ath 4, Falmouth Town 1
THREE goals in ten second half minutes ended Town’s resistance as they fell to their second defeat in
a week in SWPL Premier on Saturday.
With many games once again called off due to heavy overnight rain on Friday, Falmouth failed to
capitalise at The Mill, which had been passed fit after a pitch inspection on the morning of the
match.
The visitors started brightly and forced three corners in the opening ten minutes, before keeper
Ryan Barnes produced a tremendous triple save to deny the hosts the first goal after quarter of an
hour.
Barnes was in action again five minutes later when he dived full length to deny Tegan Rosenquest’s
header.
Torpoint made the breakthrough just before the half hour mark when Rory Simmons intercepted a
misdirected pass from defence and burst forward and fed Kirk Smith, who hit an unstoppable shot
past Barnes from 15 yards.
Town came close to an equaliser on 33 minutes when Dan Richardson broke forward and fed
Squires, whose shot beat home keeper Ben Hardie but defender Ryan Swain was on hand to make a
last ditch clearance and put the ball out for a corner.
From that set piece, skipper Joe Cooper’s header was goalbound but this time Josh King cleared the
ball off the line as Falmouth pushed for parity.
In the second period Rob Wearne crossed for Squires, whose first time shot was saved by Hardie and
and Andrew Westgarth closed in to pounce on the rebound, King was once again on hand to clear
the danger.
With an hour played, Town were still hopeful of taking some from the game, but the ensuing ten
minutes shattered that notion.
First, Seb Broomfield’s looping header eluded Barnes and although Tom Whipp looked to have made
a goal line clearance, the ball was adjudged to have crossed the line.
Two minutes later it was 3-0 when Broomfield was on the mark again, blasting home a left wing
cross from Lewis Young.
Smith then scored his second of the match when he poked home from six yards following a free kick
and subsequent scramble in the penalty area.
Falmouth snatched a consolation just two minutes later when Ed Timmons fed Harry Clarke on the
left and he beat his man and cut the ball back from the by-line for Mike Vanes to charge into the
area and smash the ball home from ten yards for his second goal of the season.
Late in the game Town might have added a second when Wearne crossed for Squires, but with
Hardie beaten, his header bounced back off the post to safety.
In the last 17 SWPL matches between the two sides, Town have won only twice and although the
score flattered the hosts, Westgarth’s men rarely looked like reversing that miserable record.
