Falmouth Town 7, Exmouth 0

GLEN SQUIRES had an afternoon he will never forget after scoring five times in what was a much-

needed victory for the hosts in SWPL Premier on Saturday.

After a winless sequence of five games, Town roared back into life with a thumping victory and a

memorable individual display for the striker.

Falmouth were missing Mike Vanes, James Ward and Dan Richardson, all out of the county, and the

suspended Harry Clarke, but they made light of the absentees with a second half goal frenzy.

In fact, they scored four goals in ten second half minutes as everything they struck turned to gold.

The rout began as early as the second minute, when Squires picked the ball up in midfield and

advanced into the penalty area before slotting it past keeper Luke Ashford.

Exmouth countered and James Ansell cut in from the right and shot across the face of goal, before

Squires’ cross just eluded the outstretched boot of Rob Wearne.

Town doubled their lead after 17 minutes when Ed Timmons found Squires on the left hand side and

he pulled the ball back for Wearne to smash home from six yards.

Exmouth rallied for ten minutes without producing a cutting edge, before the home side came

within a whisker of adding a third when centre half Tom Whipp popped up on the left and his

goalbound shot was cleared off the line by covering defender Dan Boere.

Early in the second period Ryan Barnes made a fine save from a free kick and three minutes later the

second half avalanche began.

Wearne found Squires who burst into the area, rounded the keeper and finished from six yards.

After 55 minutes the ubiquitous Squires headed wide from a Timmons free kick and just a minute

later, his 18-yard shot was parried into the path of Luke Tripconey, whose effort forced Ashworth

into a fine double save.

Dan Greet added his name to the scoresheet with 19 minutes to go when he burst on to a flick on

from Squires following a long ball.

Four became five with quarter of an hour left when Squires, full of confidence, produced an expertly

taken lob and two minutes later he reacted quickest to steer home a deflected cross from Tripconey.

Substitute Andy Westgarth then beat his marker on the left and crossed for Squires to improvise by

putting the ball over the line with his chest.

Barnes made another smart stop to deny Boere at the other end, ensuring a precious clean sheet to

accompany the goal rush at the other end.

Bearing in mind the previous seven meetings between the two teams had yielded just seven goals,

this was a bolt from the blue which Town will be doubtless delighted to have produced.
