IT'S a story to inspire - a group of farmers who formed a football team less than 12 months ago have won the Penzance 6-a-side Monday League.

Chyvarloe Farming, based in Gunwalloe, decided to enter the league last year and finished fourth after a strong end to the campaign, including a victory over the champions in the final match.

Since the article that appeared in last April's Helston Packet, in which the team advertised for new recruits, more than 50 players 50 players have attended training and 24 have represented the team in league games,

All regular players have named and numbered shirts and the age range is 15-65.

Regular senior players include organiser Paul Parfitt (farmer), his bank manager Karl Carter, James Stidworthy (butcher), Joe Orcheston and his brother Nathan, and Ben Lugg, a farmer and part time referee turned player.

Other team members include Wendron Utd youngster Phil Crawley, James Hosken, and two sets of farming brothers - Heydon and Harry Dark and Robbie and Jack Green, all of whom play for Lizard Argyle on Saturdays.

The venture has been such a success that Paul is considering resurrecting Cury Football Club, who used to play in the old Falmouth-Helston League before disbanding several years ago.

He said: "Having conquered the 6 aside League within 12 months, we as a team have discussed the possibility of setting up an 11-a-side team.

"Due to our success in the Leisure League, parish councillor and former player Reuben Curnow invited me to consider using their facilities. Cury hasn't got a football team at present but the ground has excellent facilities and potential. I see it as an opportunity to grow our current leisure interests and utilise a local facility helping the parish council with maintenance and also putting a regular football team back into Cury."

For now though, Chyvarloe Farming will continue to compete in the Leisure leagues over the summer and training will start each Thursday next week, new players welcome.
