HELSTON Rugby Club will host a Cornwall Clubs' representative side on Saturday to say farewell to LJ Collick, who is retiring from the game at the age of 35.

The scrum half has been an integral part of Helston for 20 years and in their 50th anniversary year, he has had the honour of being club captain.

He told Packet Sport: "I have some great memories and I've played with a lot of good guys over the years. I've had a good ride and now it's time to get off."

Saturday's season-ending game will also mark the tenth anniversary of the club's current home, having previous shared grounds with the football and cricket clubs and different times.

"It'll be a good day and a nice way to finish. I have a bit of a knee injury at the moment and the physio told me to rest, but I told him that I'll have plenty of time to rest after Saturday."

Collick is perhaps a dying breed of local sportsmen, sticking with his hometown club when he might have tried pastures new.

"I think youngsters are lured by rugby academies these days and if they have a top or a bit of kit thrown at them, they'll go and play there. I understand that they want to better themselves and there's nothing wrong with that, but if you cut me open, I'd have Helston RFC running through me."

Wing Ross Williams is also retiring after around 30 years playing for the club. Collick said he was trying to coax him into playing on Saturday in the hope that they could sign off together.

Both men will continue to be involved in the club, in a coaching capacity and on the committee and Collick is content that he is retiring at the right time.

"With the core of players we have, as well as our successful Colts and an influx of new players, the future is bright," he added.
