LIZARD ARGYLE have been crowned Trelawny League Premier Division champions after a late goal from player-manager Craig Pollard earned them the point that secured the title on Saturday.

Trailing 2-1 at Mousehole with two minutes to go, Pollard popped up to head home top scorer Tristan Hawkins' cross to all but clinch the championship.

Chacewater could have mathematically overtaken them had they beaten St Buryan 15-0 on Monday, but the west Cornwall side conceded the match, which by league rules meant that Chacewater were awarded a 3-0 victory.

Pollard, who has been in charge of the side for six seasons, told Packet Sport: "After winning Division 1 last year our aim was to consolidate with some good performances this year.

"However, we started well and were top of the table for all but one week. The lads are all mates, they socialise together and our aim now is to try and bring senior football to the club."

Pollard said that they celebrated tentatively on Saturday, knowing that Chacewater could still pull off the most unlikely of victories on Monday. They can now look forward to a proper celebration on their presentation night at the club, which will be held on Saturday, June 11.

"Apart from two or three of us, all the players are under the age of 25 and they want to try and play as high as they can, so we'll definitely be looking to push on next year and make the necessary improvements to the ground in readiness for senior football," he added.
