Fifty years on from England’s proudest football moment when skipper Bobby Moore lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy, The FA has announced a series of events and activities to mark the anniversary in the county – and the achievement of the players who won the World Cup.

To ensure the anniversary has a future legacy, The FA will also be making 66 awards of £1,966 to community projects at football grassroots level. These awards will primarily be made via County FAs to give the legacy national reach. They will start to be made as the summer unfolds.

In Cornwall that award is being split across eight grassroots clubs whom are all running different events to show how strong football is in the County and it highlights that the sense of community and spirit is very much alive and well. The money will go towards supporting the club and contributing towards kit and improvements to grounds/clubhouses.

Each club will be presented with a cheque and commemorative plaque to show that 50 years on the game at grassroots level is in safe hands.

The first event is on Saturday at St Mawgan and the final events is at St Dennis on Sunday July, 31. In between those dates there will be celebrations taking place at Mousehole FC, St Agnes, St Day, Newquay, Bodmin Town and Wendron United.

St Mawgan will be hosting two mini soccer tournaments, U8 at 10am and U10 at 2pm and at the same time the dads of those teams will be playing in their own adult small sided competition, all with an England 1966 theme. There will also be fun challenges throughout the day including a keepy uppy competition, the cross bar challenge and re-creating Geoff Hurst’s famous goal, we are not sure yet if a Russian Linesman will be present as a judge. St Mawgan will be asking for small donations for these and all money raised will go towards The Help Izzy Walk Campaign, which is a wonderful charity https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/helpizzywalk
