Cornish catamaran sailing team Tom Phipps and Jon Cook, took overall line honours at the 2016 Lake Garda Foiling Week.

The team last sailed together on Lake Garda when they were 11 years old in a much smaller catamaran as a junior catamaran racing crew.

Now they sail the fully foiling International Flying Phantom as part of the DMS Catamaran racing team.

The Flying Phantom is one of the most sophisticated and extreme beach launch sailing catamarans on the market and reach speeds of 35 mph+ on just two 18ft ( 5.5m) hulls.

The team started well on day one with three first positions.

They followed this by a series of top three results over the remaining races leading to them taking top place on the winner’s podium.

Following the event prize giving Tom, from Mylor, flew to Rio’s Olympic sailing venue to act as training partner to the selected Olympic GBR catamaran racing team, who will be competing in just a few weeks’ time for real.

Foiling catamarans are currently the pinnacle of performance catamaran sailing but Tom and Jon started their catamaran sailing at Windsport International, on the waters around Falmouth.

They have sailed various catamarans over the years including the very successful Dart 18 manufactured locally.
