IN terms of results, Falmouth Town's pre-season preparations have not been particularly fruitful.

However, the real business starts on Saturday when they entertain Newquay in the opening fixture of the SWPL Premier, a game which will see brothers Tom and Jordan Annear make debuts against their former club.

Town boss Andrew Westgarth, who has been on holiday in Greece, said: "With Tom Whipp getting married this week and players away on holiday, we have had half the team away for most of the games, which hasn't been ideal but it has given me chance to look at the talented youngsters and other players we have at the club.

"For me it's all about that first game of the season, so results in pre-season don't really matter too much.

Town lost to Helston in the final of the Dave Gardner Memorial Trophy match at Bickland Park on Saturday. Earlier in the tournament they had beaten Porthleven and lost to Penzance.

A total of 27 players have been used in pre-season - which does not include the reserve team that played Penzance - while last year's top scorer Glen Squires has yet to make an appearance and fellow striker Jordan Annear has played barely 60 minutes of football having been on holiday.

Westgarth added: "This pre-season has been a first for me as I took over last year midway through. I'm really pleased with the personnel with have got in. I believe the three players (the two Annears and Ben Williams) have improved the team and getting Dennis in on the side line with Gary Pascoe and myself has been a real plus.

"There has been a big club effort to tidy up Bickland Park this summer. We have a new stand opposite the main grand stand built after the bad weather we had last winter blow them down.

"The Conway Road end stand has had a face lift and we also painted nearly everything in the ground, so I'm really pleased with the way it is looking."

Players in: Tom Annear - CM from Newquay; Jordan Annear - CF from Newquay; Dennis Annear - Coach; Ben Williams - LB from St Austell

Players out: Luke Tripconey - Helston

Westgarth's aims for the season: To better last season. Top 8 and a Cup

Tip for the title: I have no idea what the likes of Plymouth Argyle and Tiverton have as they are new to the league so I will go with what we played against last year, so I'm going with either St Austell or Tavistock.

Tip for a dark horse: Tavistock could be considered a dark horse as only got promoted back into the Premier League last season. I think who ever finishes above St Austell, Tavistock or Bodmin will win the league.
