SIX goals in two games for Falmouth Town striker Rob Wearne – but you’d hardly notice.

Bickland Park’s number nine became the first Town player to score back to back hat-tricks for almost 60 years, when George Ellis matched the feat in the 1958/59 season with trebles against Helston and Saltash.

Town boss Andrew Westgarth said: “He’s quite a quiet lad, you couldn’t wish to meet a nicer bloke to be honest.

“If I scored a hat-trick I’d be buzzing, telling everyone about it, but after the game you wouldn’t even know he’d done it.”

There was a brief flash of emotion from Wearne when he bagged his third in the opening half hour of Town’s victory at St Blazey on Saturday. He raised both arms in the air, but then it was on with the job in hand.

After dominating the first period, the visitors almost let slip a 3-0 lead but hung on to win 3-2 against the hosts, for whom Tornado Bello scored twice before being sent off for a second bookable offence with 10 minutes to go.

“It was a strange game, because we were in total control but we let them back into it and I was pretty nervous for the final 20 minutes,” said Westgarth.

Town’s bright start to the season – they have scored eight goals in their first two games – sets up a mouthwatering clash tonight against Saltash, who have won their first three games, including a memorable victory at Bodmin Town on Saturday.

“They’ve got some lively boys up front so it’ll be a real test for us.

“I’m really looking forward to it, because we’re going into the game full of confidence and we’ll be aiming to keep the unbeaten start going,” Westgarth added.

Glenn Squires returns to the squad having missed the opening two games, which will only add to competition for places in a forward line that now boasts Wearne, Jordan Annear and Westgarth himself.
