Camborne 50, Launceston 11

Camborne eased to the top of the National League Three (SW) table with a convincing seven-try victory over Launceston in front of a four figure crowd at the Recreation Ground.

For ‘Town’ Damien Cook was restored to the 2nd row following suspension whilst Richard Kevern came in for a first start of the season with Murray Westren switching to the wing. In the front row Malcolm Hearn began at prop whilst Brad Howe started on the blindside of the back row.

The opening exchanges of the much anticipated Cornish Derby clash were evenly contested with kickers David Mankee and Fraser Honey trading penalties.

The Cherry & Whites bagged their first try on 10 minutes when the forwards surged for the line to allow Tommy -Lee Southworth to dot down. Fly half Mankee converted for 10-3.

Penalties went astray for both sides before visiting fly half Honey found the posts from 40 metres to reduce the deficit. That was as close as it came for the Cornish All Blacks as the home side stretched their lead to 21-6 at the break.

First man of the match Ben Kemp followed up to score a corner try when hooker Southworth was held just short before Mankee landed two further penalties the latter from a wide angle on the half time whistle.

Camborne made the game safe from the resumption sweeping down the slope for a brace of tries in quick succession. Centre Joel Matavesi showed his quality to go over wide out before combining delightfully with replacement scrum half Taron Peacock to send elder brother Sam romping over near the posts. Mankee added a conversion to take hi side out of sight at 33-6.

The Cherry & Whites continued to hold the upper hand and midway through the half fit again full back Kevern was twice released to run in well taken tries the 2nd of which centre Jack Simmons had created with a fine run.

Late on the home side completed their half century when flanker Brad Howe powered over from a close range for Mankee to convert but there was still time for the spirited visitors to mount a series of attacks ending with a hard earned and deserved consolation try touched down under a pile of bodies by hooker Fred Bulut.

Camborne will look to consolidate top spot and make it six wins from six start this weekend when Salisbury visit the Recreation Ground
