Tehidy Park GC claimed their 10th win in the CGU Maxam Cup’s 47 year history at Launceston yesterday when their team of 6 squeezed to a win over neighbours Truro GC by just the one shot over 36 holes of foursomes strokeplay. With Tehidy Club Captain Mike Eddy within days of relinquishing his post, the team delivered him a fitting piece of silverware on a gloriously sunny day in north Cornwall.

The Maxam saw 15 clubs compete overall but Tehidy’s team of Justin Barnard, Matt Lock, brothers Peter and Richard Simmons, together with current county Vice Captain Ian Veale and county team member Rob MacGregor combined to give the club a team total of 293 against Truro’s 294. West Cornwall GC finished 3rd a further 4 shots back on 298 with St Enodoc 4th on 299, a point ahead of last year’s winners Trevose (300) and Bowood Park (301).

MacGregor and Veale also claimed a win in the pairs element as they put together rounds of one over 71 and two over par 72 to win on countback from the West Cornwall pairing of Matt Richards and Alex Glasson on the same score. The pairs first round score could have been even better but for a double bogey 7 at their 9th hole the par 5 18th.

In the competition which sees the best two morning scores added to the team’s best two afternoon scores, Veale and MacGregor led the way with that 71 and were ably assisted by their second and third pairs who both returned 76s. Whilst Barnard and Lock fell away a little in the afternoon the Simmons brothers stepped up to the plate scoring a 2nd round 74 which was crucial to the team’s success. Playing in the last group on the course Veale and MacGregor then delivered the final blow to Truro’s hopes with the 72.

On a beautiful sunny and warm autumn day the Launceston course was presented in excellent condition and the host club gave themselves a fighting chance as Kieran Hancock and Richard Jasper had a good day scoring a morning 74 followed by a 72. At the halfway stage the club were joint fourth but their team fell away to a seventh place finish on 302.

For Truro the best morning score came from Joe Reynard and Paul Suddes with a 72 and they completed a strong day’s golf following this up with a 74. George Champion and Jack Mewton scored a morning 77 but were unable to repeat this as their second round dropped to an 80. However after a morning 78 from Jared Mortimore and Jamie Crocker the pair returned a joint best afternoon score of 71 to only just come up short of a winning spot. The 71 was matched by the Newquay team’s brothers Aaron and Nick Stephens.

Third placed West Cornwall benefitted from the scores of Richards and Glasson but at the halfway stage the team lay joint 7th. The pairings of Bradley Barnes with Finn Rule and Jon Coleman with Phil Weaver had disappointing morning rounds of 81 and 84 respectively but both improved considerably with respective scores of 74 and 76 to push their team into the 3rd spot.

For St Enodoc, who finished 4th, the best overall score came from Mike Masters and Simon Welch with a 75 and a 74. Bowood Park were lying joint second after Rd1 but they too fell away. Their best scores came with a morning 74 from Tom Haley and Simon Hobbs and an afternoon 74 from Josh Greenaway and Jon Rowe.

Launceston GC Vice Captain Phil Bott welcomed all the competitors to the club before he and CGU Vice President Mike Ellis presented the prizes. Ellis thanked Launceston GC for their warm welcome and hospitality.
