Falmouth Town 4, Tiverton Town 2

THERE’S never a dull moment when Falmouth take to the field at the moment.

This was a tremendous, free-flowing game in which the hosts pressed for long periods but had to be wary of Tiverton’s quick counter attacks.

Falmouth took the lead after only seven minutes when Tom Annear’s aerial ball from the half way line enabled Marcello Jones to race through, nod the ball past onrushing keeper John Wannell and slot into an empty net.

Town were caught napping midway through the half when Tiverton took a short corner and Mikey Williams broke into the penalty area, where he was tripped by Jordan Annear.

After a lengthy delay in which Annear received treatment for an injury, Ethan Phillips held his nerve to fire the spot kick past keeper Ryan Barnes.

The home side's passing was crisp and accurate and almost produced a second goal when Dan Richardson's clever pass almost released Rob Wearne, but Wannell was quick off his line to snuff out the danger.

Another neat build-up found Jones in space on the edge of the area after 36 minutes. He laid the ball off to Jordan Annear, who curled a delicious shot into the top left hand corner to restore Falmouth's lead.

They should have added a third before the break when Wearne's shot through a crowd scene fell to Richardson, but his close range effort was straight at Wannell.

The hosts established a two-goal cushion ten minutes into the second half when Richardson’s persistence down the right earned a throw-in.

James Ward sent an almost impossibly long throw into the area and Rob Wearne popped up unmarked to head neatly into the right hand corner.

Tiverton then enjoyed their best spell of the match. Tricky footwork from Phillips carved out a shooting chance and he screwed his shot into the path of substitute Kenny Ord, who stumbled over the ball with the goal at his mercy.

The visitors deservedly pulled one back, albeit in fortuitous circumstances when a low cross ricocheted off Wearne’s shin and past the helpless Barnes 15 minutes from time.

With the game now on a knife edge, some niggles that had been established in the first half started to reappear between the two sets of players.

It didn’t boil over, but it was bubbling.

Satisfaction for Town then, when they added the decisive fourth goal following a Richardson corner which was met by the head of Ward and fell to Jordan Annear, who nodded home his second of the match from close range.

It had been thoroughly enjoyable fare and a much-needed victory for Town, who had suffered two hard-to-swallow defeats against St Austell and Bodmin last week.
