Camborne 57, Newton Abbot 17

Camborne comfortably maintained their 100 per cent record with a clinical nine-try demolition of a determined Newton Abbot in front of a big crowd at the Recreation Ground.

An eighth successive National League Three victory for ‘Town’ marked the final game for a while for skipper Sam Matavesi and the Fijian international responded with yet another man of the match display and a hat trick of tries.

The visitors began strongly but the home side with Jack Simmons influential then hit them with a brace of first quarter tries.

First the classy centre broke the cover to release full back Richard Kevern for the opener and soon after he romped over under the posts himself from long range. David Mankee converted both for 14-0.

With the advantage of the slope Newton Abbot continued to dominate territory but could not find a way through the home cover until their right wing squeezed over wide out on the half hour.

Almost immediately Camborne retaliated with fly half Rhys Brownfield showing his strength to jink over for an unconverted try for a 19-5 lead before half time.

Early in the second period the home bonus point arrived as lock Ben Kemp peeled off a driving maul to plunge over near the posts. Scrum half Mankee added the extras but the spirited visitors hit back to stay in touch thanks to a converted catch and drive score.

Leading by 26-12 Camborne then went out of sight on the hour with another couple of well taken tries.

First the all action Matavesi powered in and then flanker James Goldsworthy dotted down on the back of an unstoppable maul with Mankee improving both efforts with well judged kicks.

Left wing Josh Semmens did well to make the corner flag for Camborne’s seventh touchdown before the Cherry & Whites conceded a soft try from a charged down clearance kick to make it 45-17.

Late on the stage was set for flanker Matavesi to wrap things up in style as he fittingly picked up two more tries.

The first came in following up after replacement No 8 Dave Roberts went very close and finally after Goldsworthy carried back the kick off with interest he stormed down the touchline to loud cheers in front of the West Bank faithful.

Mankee added a further conversion as Camborne now turn their attention to next weekend’s huge table topping clash at Old Redcliffians.
