A trio of boxers from Falmouth and Penryn ABC travelled to Torquay on Saturday, for Torbay ABC’s show, their last competitive outing before Christmas, along with coaches Chris Martin and Dan Coles.

Sadly, Lewis Rollason’s opponent failed to make the weight, so it was left to seniors Brian Higgins and Joe True to do the business. Brian was first up, against Torbay’s Will Walker.

In an even contest, where fierce exchanges were exchanged between the pair throughout the bout, Walker took strength from his supporters in the home crowd, using their encouragement to raise his game in the latter stages, making Higgins miss a few shots in the dying seconds of the contest, whilst scoring with his own, to draw the split decision from the judges.

Joe True faced Michael Morgan, from Gloucester’s Barton Hill club, in a top of the bill clash.

True started well, using his height and reach advantage to score throughout the first round. Morgan came back aggressively in the second, forcing True on to the back foot by pressing forward throughout with strong punches, levelling the scores going into the last round.

True responded by upping the pressure, landing solid hooks and uppercuts in the third round as Morgan pressed forwards, moving well to avoid getting caught up in a brawl, which would have suited Morgan’s style of fighting.

By the final bell, True was showing clear dominance, deservedly taking a unanimous points win from the judges.

A great finish to the first half of the season for Falmouth and Penryn ABC, looking forward to more to come in the New Year, from a rapidly progressing team of boxers.
