Falmouth 82, Tavistock 0

Ten minutes into the game Falmouth having scored three tries, the Tavistock coach asked, "what have you been giving these boys?".

The answer is simple - confidence. The Eagles have been given the confidence of their coaches to go out and play an attacking, free flowing brand of rugby and the players have the confidence that they can produce the goods. Add to that a pride in the strength of their defence and you begin to see why they sit top of the Cornwall/Devon League.

Falmouth started strongly, with three quick scores from a total of seven tries in the first half, kept their patterns and game plan in place for 80 minutes and added seven more tries in the second period.

Falmouth were without coaches Graham Whitmore and Chris Morgan for the day, so pre-match preparation was slightly different, so it was essential that they made a strong start to settle any nerves.

Mark Lea provided the spark in the opening 8 minutes making a break for the first by Simon Bailey and scoring another. The team relaxed, the confidence grew and the third was soon scored by David Jones, who ran straight through the Tavistock line from a set piece line out move. Man of the match Lea got his second before Jones also added another as Falmouth secured an early bonus point.

The visitors, threatened through the centre and the back row of Schutkacker and Bragg earned the visitors a series of penalty kicks. Tavistock edged their way upfield to the Falmouth 5 meter line but the line out was turned over and instead of opting for a clearance the ball was quickly spread wide and Tom Edmonds ran 70 metres to score and another line out steal from Trevelyan Ward brought a try for second row partner Jon Baglow.

Falmouth brought on their replacements who began to make their mark in the second period, as the scores continued to flow. Tom Edmonds with his second, Jake Seviour sensing a gap and darting across the line after a quick tap penalty and Ward celebrating his birthday with a rare score, celebrated raucously by his visiting friends.

Justyn Irons, not having the best day with the boot but choosing an off day where that scarcely mattered, ran in from halfway, as Tavistock for the first time began to fall off tackles.

David Jones completed his hat trick before Tommy Tonkins scored his first try for the Eagles, Matt Brewer completing the scoring with a sparkling run down the wing.

It takes a seismic event to put a win of this scale into the shadows but Arthur Williams, stalwart of Falmouth Rugby club managed just that, as the Eagles and supporters. celebrating this thumping victory, were stunned as Arthur announced his intention to stand down from his role at the rugby club.

Arthur, has decided that he would rather watch some rugby from the sidelines rather than having to watch from behind the bar.
