Falmouth 64, Withycombe 5

DAN Hubble produced a scintillating display on his home debut to score six tries as the Eagles continued their fine start to the Devon and Cornwall league programme.

Falmouth are now two points clear at the top of the table with a game in hand.

Falmouth made several changes to the squad that had beaten Tavistock the week before - Seb Firth starting at full back, Hubble on the wing, Tom Edmonds moving to centre, Owen Hambly and Matt Brewer in the back row, Paddy Varker and Tom Job joining the replacements.

From their own half, Owen Hambly passed to Tom Spiller and on to Hubble who showed a devastating burst of pace to round his opposite number to score under the posts, Justyn Irons converting. Two minutes later, Hubble again sprinted past the defence for an identical second.

The game settled into a pattern, against a strong wind Falmouth were unable to kick for territory and had to keep the ball in hand. Withycombe, could release pressure through kicks and spent a period camped in the Eagles 22.

A smart tap penalty and quick step through the Falmouth defence, saw centre George Doomey touchdown for the visitors.

The Eagles fought their way upfield to launch a series of attacks on the Withycombe line, eventually earning a penalty, converted by Irons, for a 12-point half time lead.

A perfect start to the second period saw Tom Spiller score following a line out and driving run from AJ Geach and Hubble notched up his hat trick and bonus point score, weaving past two players after good work from the backs.

The visitors, playing against the conditions and visibly tiring were stretched further as Hubble, outpacing the cover, scored his fourth, before replacement Tom Job made his mark with a 40 meter dash and fellow substitutes Varker and Dobson, were busy looking for ball carrying responsibility.

Hubble, who had tormented his opposite number all afternoon, scored a fifth before completing his scoring with a sixth, extending a telescopic arm to collect a pass from David Jones before diving in the corner, to complete the finest scoring performance for a Falmouth player in memory.

Tom Spiller rounded off the afternoon by spotting a gap and sprinting 30 metres for his second try , Irons converting to complete the scoring.

Falmouth next face a trip to Bodmin, who will pose a considerable challenge at home.
