PERHAPS it is fitting that at the start of the festive period, a new star was born at Falmouth Rugby Club on Saturday.

Dan Hubble, who turned 19 three weeks ago, scored an incredible six tries in his home debut at the Recreation Ground, as the Eagles romped to another high-scoring victory in the Cornwall/Devon League.

Dan told the Falmouth Packet: "It was a surprise to be in the starting line-up because I hadn't made the squad last week, but I came to Falmouth to gain more game time so hopefully I can hold down my place."

Dan, a former Truro School student from Bissoe, played for Camborne Colts last season but was unable to forge his way into the first team after their promotion to National League rugby.

He had come on as a replacement at Plymstock after joining Falmouth six weeks ago, but the cancelled match against Penryn and a postponed fixture at Tamar Saracens made for a frustrating November.

"Pace is my main attribute and my first two tries were very similar, running in from my own half. Two of the later tries were walk-ins after great team moves along the line."

The winger did score five tries in one match earlier this year for England Lambs, a representative side of all public schools in the country.

He was selected for a 12-day tour to Argentina, during which they played Uruguay under-20s.

Dan is hoping to attend Loughborough University to study sports science next year, but his more immediate goal is selection for the forthcoming Cornwall under-20s season.
