Falmouth Town 2, Camelford 1

TOWN set up a Senior Cup quarter-final clash at Torpoint with a workmanlike victory at Bickland Park on Saturday.

It was not the sort of performance that saw them run riot in their last two matches, but it was enough to overcome a young Camelford side which lacked a cutting edge.

Before the game, players, management and supporters stood for a minute's silence to mark the passing of former Falmouth striker Andy Morris, who passed away last Monday.

The first half had more stoppages than chances, with players on both sides needing attention which prevented any flow to the game.

Perhaps Falmouth scored too early – always a rather bizarre notion – but one that seemed to ring true here.

Jordan Annear put them ahead after just two minutes when he profited from a lovely through-ball from brother Tom.

Annear had found acres of space just inside the area and although keeper Josh Grills got a decent hand to his shot, it was not enough to prevent it finding the corner of the net.

Another brotherly combination presented Jordan with another chance midway through the half, after Tom’s interception had fallen perfectly into his path. The striker’s shot went a mile over the bar, however.

It was Camelford’s turn to catch Falmouth napping at the start of the second half, when Josh Penrose ghosted in behind a static defence, rounded keeper Ryan Barnes and slotted into an empty net.

The hosts almost found an immediate reply when Ollie Walker’s low cross at the back post found an unmarked Rob Wearne, but he shot over the bar from six yards out.

The winner arrived in the 71st minute when a long throw on the halfway line from James Ward was flicked on by Wearne into the path of Annear, who burst into the area and beat Grills with a low shot at his near post.

Walker switched to the right hand side following the introduction of Harry Clarke and it should have brought instant reward.

The pacey youngster was brought down just inside the penalty area by George Harrison, but referee Neil Hunnisett, with the aid of his assistant Jon Harris, awarded a goal kick to the visitors.

A slick passing move saw Clarke release Annear through the inside left channel, but his speculative 25 yard shot flew wide of Grills’ left hand post.
