Helston Ath 1, Exmouth Town 3

HELSTON'S barren run continued on Saturday despite a spirited second half display that could have earned them a precious point in SWPL Premier.

The Blues have had a torrid run, winning just once in ten games, albeit against many of the top sides in the league.

Exmouth are certainly amongst that elite, having lost only five times in 21 outings this season.

Home keeper Barrie Wyatt was inspired in the first half, making a string of fine saves as the visitors threatened to run riot.

An unfortunate Hugh Howlett own goal put the visitors in front midway through the half, before left winger Nathan Cooper produced a splendid second goal when he cut in and smashed the ball home off the underside of the bar.

Brighter news was on the horizon, however, with long-term injury victim Phil Cattran making his first appearance for eight months as a second half substitute.

He also played a key part in his side's goal, nodding the ball on for veteran striker Matt Drummond to score and set up a tense finale.

The outstanding Luke Durham then slotted home a third goal to end Helston's hopes of digging out a draw.

Helston: B Wyatt, S Kellow, K Davis, J Thomson, H Howlett, A Collick, J Adlard, G Mills, T Russell, M Drummond, J McCardie. Subs: N Taylor, P Cattran, K Maugham.

The Blues have a crucial match at struggling Newquay on Saturday, but will be without their two top scorers Matt Drummond (wedding) and Matt Buchan, who is on duty for Cornwall Youth.

On Wednesday (25th), Kellaway Park will host a charity match between a LWC Combination League Representative XI and a Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm XI. Proceeds will go to Penhaligon's Friends. Entry is £2 and £1 concession.
