THE scenario could scarcely be more beautifully poised.

Falmouth, flying at the top of Cornwall/Devon League, visit fierce rivals Penryn on Saturday and will not want to be derailed by their neighbours, writes Matt Dixon.

They are nine points clear with a game in hand – which they will play against bottom side Tamar Saracens on February 4 – after disposing of nearest rivals Paignton 34-0 at the weekend.

Coach Graham Whitmore said: “The boys were outstanding.

“Considering the quality of opposition, to keep the scoreline blank was very pleasing. The players are understanding the system and playing with ambition.

He added: “They also have a real enthusiasm for defence and you could see that as the game went on, we were desperate to keep their score to zero.”

Paignton had lost only once before Saturday’s game but the Eagles ran in six unanswered tries, installing them as hot favourites to take the title and advance into Western Counties, from whence Penryn came last year.

“Every week poses a new challenge and Saturday won’t be any different,” said Whitmore.

“We give our players licence to play but we must also adapt to the conditions and our opponents.”

Falmouth should be at full strength for the game, which means only five or six players who competed in the Boxing Day match will be in the 22 for Saturday’s showdown at the Memorial Ground.

Penryn should also have a strong squad to pick from as their injury woes of two months ago appear to be behind them.

They were convincing 27-5 winners at Tavistock on Saturday which coach Chris Lea described as a “big win on the road”.

He added: “With injuries and work commitments clearing, selection could be tricky for the derby.”

It promises to be quite an afternoon.
