Torpoint Ath 3, Falmouth Town 3

TOP goalscorer Rob Wearne missed a penalty as Town had to settle for a point despite leading 2-0 in this SWPL Premier thriller.

This game was dress rehearsal for the Senior Cup quarter-final in ten days’ time and Falmouth will be disappointed not to have struck a psychological blow.

It looked promising when they took the lead after ten minutes. Marcello Jones broke down the right and his high, looping cross was brilliantly headed beyond keeper Jason Peters by Wearne.

John McCreery shot just wide as Torpoint sought an equaliser, but the visitors doubled their lead midway through the half when Ed Timmons and Jones combined well for the latter to cross into the path of Jordan Annear, who drilled it home from 12 yards.

Dan Richardson almost added a third when his strong shot flew just wide of the far post, before Torpoint hit back with two goals in four minutes before the break.

On 38 minutes a long ball from Lewis Young on the right found Kirk Smith running into the area unmarked and he shot home from ten yards.

Smith was at it again four minutes later when he pounced on Ryan Barnes’ save following a swerving effort from Curtis Damerell.

A pause for breath after an eventful first period, but it did not take long for the second half to burst into life.

From the kick off, Tom Annear struck a lovely long pass over the top for brother Jordan to race on to and slot past Peters for 3-2.

Torpoint were level just three minutes later though, when Zach Wheeler headed home from eight yards.

Barnes had to be alert to tip over a Young effort from 20 yards out, before the pivotal moment of the match arrived on 58 minutes.

Ollie Walker, who had seen little of the ball, made a rare foray into the penalty area and was sandwiched to the ground by two defenders and keeper Peters, who was booked.

Wearne made clean connection with the resulting penalty, but it hit the foot of the upright and bounced away to safety.

Jones, who had a fine game, produced another good run and shot over the bar with 20 minutes to go, before Barnes tipped over another Smith effort to deny him his hat-trick.
