Veor 24, Helston 27

Helston produced a third Cornwall 1victory in a row after making the short trip to Veor missing a number of influential players on Saturday.

John Lamsin, Danny Lowe, Chris Ollife and Richard Johnson were all unavailable against a very forward-dominant home side, but the visitors produced a superb performance to take all five points on offer.

With conditions poor for both sides, it was Veor who were first off the mark with two Martin Strick tries.

Helston hit back almost immediately, with a kick over the defensive line from James Wilson for Decarlo Trerise to chase and touchdown in the corner. Paul Saberton steadied the ship with a penalty five minutes later.

It was very much a tight well fought forward contest for the remainder of the half. Again Chris Ward, Dan Woodley and Ewan Cowie impressing in the front row for the blue and whites.

Having weathered the storm in the first half and losing captain Craig Saunders with a knee injury, Helston made the most of set-pieces and the back line soon overpowered a physical Veor side.

The ball going through the hands now stretched the home side, allowing Calvin Warwick to release Decarlo Trerise and shortly after Tom Townsend to score.

Helston pressed at every opportunity and driven on by man-of-the-match Matt Holland, switched play with Paul Saberton who made a 60-metre break to score under the posts and make his own conversion much easier.

Veor are where they are in the league for a reason and dug in, coming back strongly late on in the game with another try, but Helston held their nerve to come away with a well-deserved victory after some great defensive work.

Coach John Court said: "I was massively impressed with the whole team today from one to 21. We played some decent rugby and at times had to put our bodies on the line in defence. As a coach you can't ask for much more."
