Falmouth Town 0, Callington Town 0

IT was a case of defence triumphing over attack at Bickland Park on Saturday, as it ended goalless in SWPL Premier between Falmouth Town and Callington Town, writes Matt Friday.

Both sides spurned excellent chances to win the game, with the two sides walking away with a point apiece at Bickland for the third successive season.

Callington produced the first big moment of a fairly even opening 45 minutes, and probably should have been ahead when Andy Sargent headed wide from six yards out.

Falmouth, who have drawn league leaders Saltash United in the semi-finals of the Cornwall Senior Cup, had to wait until the final minutes of the half for their first clear chance. Walker’s cross fell to Rob Wearne, but he was unable to hit the target.

The hosts were in again moments later when Jordan Annear escaped the attention of the Callington defence, only to be thwarted by visiting keeper Sam Borthwick.

The second half began with both goalkeepers being called into action. Ryan Barnes stopped Sargent’s header before Borthwick kept out Tom Whipp’s effort five minutes later.

Falmouth began to take control of the game, and Wearne, who scored in the reverse fixture in August, squandered another opportunity when he fired over in the 57th minute.

Callington absorbed much of Falmouth’s pressure and then nearly scored themselves through striker Kelvin Fyneboys, but for a superb goal-saving tackle by Tom Whipp.

Falmouth pushed forward for a winner as time began to ebb away, but were denied by the visiting defence who blocked strikes from Glenn Squires and Jordan Annear.

However it was Callington who almost had the final word, when Alex Mills’ shot was deflected over Ryan Barnes and onto the crossbar, much to the relief of the home side.

Packet Pick: T Annear – had a solid game, often setting up chances for team-mates.

Falmouth: R Barnes, E Timmons, H Clarke, T Whipp, J Cooper, D Richardson, M Jones (R Pope 59), T Annear, R Wearne (G Squires 59), J Annear, O Walker (J Stocker 76).

Falmouth’s next match is an away game against Plymouth Parkway in the SWPL Premier on Saturday.
