Penryn College teacher Mark Lewarne has signalled his intent ahead of this year's European Championships in Slovakia.

The 31 year-old has announced his qualification for the British team, and looks to put what was a disappointing 2016 behind him and push for a top spot in the Slovakian capital Bratislava.

Lewarne who has had his fair share of issues over the past 12 months, both mentally and physically, is looking ahead to what could be a highly successful year of competition.

"It's been really tough this past year, I suffered with depression after the Europeans last year and became quite ill, I lost a load of weight and just wasn't myself at all.

"This was probably the darkest place I had ever been in, but I used sport to get myself back in shape mentally and that was the first step.

"Once you have a clear mind and focus, your body will follow suit. I know it's going to be emotional when I step back on that start line again representing my country, my family I know will be proud, they have been a massive help and anyone closely connected to me will understand.

Lewarne, who has been a regular face on the British team for the past eight years, is looking to use all his experience ahead of this year and push for a possible podium spot at the Europeans.

"I'm heading off to Cyprus for a pre-season training camp next month, I will spend some time working with some top international athletes over there. I'm just hoping the hard work will be rewarded.

"My training has been much more consistent this year and I've been working hard in the pool in the mornings and run sessions most days. I've just got to stay injury free and look after the body as much as I can," he added.
