Kelton Dawe is a young rugby player who has swapped the snowy fields of Canada for the vibrant coastline of Cornwall, writes Joshua Walker.

Originally from Truro, Nova Scotia, the 19 year-old forward travelled 3,000 miles to spend six months at Falmouth RFC, where he has continued to build up his experience in rugby.

Kelton said: “Everyone on the team have taught me so much, including the coaches Chris Morgan and Graham [Whitmore].

“In the last couple of months, my game has improved massively. I just want to thank everyone for that and hopefully when I go back home, I show the skills that I have learnt here.”

During his six months with Falmouth, Dawe practised with the squad twice a week and played at weekends. He also trained with the Cornish Pirates twice a week.

Graham Whitmore, head coach at Falmouth RFC, said: “Since his return from his short Christmas break in Canada, Kelton’s confidence has grown hugely and his performances on the field have rightly earned him a starting place in the first XV back row over recent weeks.

“He is a very popular lad and has been really valued during his time volunteering at the Cornish Pirates on the analysis team.

“I wish him the very best for the future and he will always be warmly welcomed back to the club should he wish to return.”

Dawe received his opportunity to play rugby in England by the Canadian Truro Saints coach Dan Mosley, who also sent local  players Ryan Strickland and Brett Johnson to England in the past.

Justyn Irons, Falmouth Eagles captain, said: “Kelton has been a great addition to the Falmouth squad this season. He’s listened to coaches and senior players and worked tirelessly at training and in his own time to better his performance.

“He should be very proud of what he’s achieved in his time at Falmouth Rugby Club. We made a promise to him that we’ll finish this season and make him a league title winner.”

Dawe is travelling back to Nova Scotia to complete a college course and he aims to play for Canada at international level.

“I hope to make my Province team, Nova Scotia, and after that move on to any other professional team.”
