Mawnan 2, West Cornwall 1

Mawnan lifted the Trelawny League's Dunn Cup on Thursday evening after pulling off a narrow 2-1 win over West Cornwall at Helston FC.

The Greens made a bright start with some early pressure, but it was West Cornwall who struck the first telling blow in the seventh minute when West Cornwall cleared a corner and spread it wide to Owain Barrett. He somehow went past three covering defenders on a superb run from the half-way line and after cutting in gave goalkeeper Jamie Gray no chance with a blistering shot into the far corner of the net.

Mawnan, throughout most of the half, failed to exploit the wide open spaces but on one of the few occasions that Mawnan played along the top flank it brought an equaliser in the 42nd minute. Ross Stevens mopped up a West Cornwall attack and played the ball to Adam Keenan who, despite being closely marked, nudged the ball inside to a determined Greg Hobbs who cut in past a defender and drilled his shot into the net as the keeper came out to narrow the angle.

In the second half West Cornwall reshuffled their line-up and for the first few minutes it looked a good move, but The Greens quickly established a grip and created some excellent chances with the goalkeeper making a great point blank save from Hobbs and two brilliant saves from Keenan and Ryan James.

The decisive goal came in the 68th minute following Mawnan pressure. A corner was whipped in by Steve Winnan and under pressure from Hobbs a defender headed into the net past his own keeper.

West Cornwall pushed men forward in a last-ditch effort to find an equaliser, but Mawnan's defence snuffed out any threat to hold on to their lead.
