Cornwall 45, Hertfordshire 28

Cornwall, with Penryn's Grant Randlesome and George Jones in the side, beat Hertfordshire to return to Twickenham for the fifth year in a row.

For the third week running, it was a storming second half performance which ensured Cornwall ran out as bonus point winners against a good Hertfordshire side who pushed the Black and Gold all the way despite having to make seven changes to the team they originally announced on Thursday.

Cornwall started on fire with Sam Matavesi plunging over after just sixty-eight seconds after a storming run from Tommy Notman. Matt Shepherd added the extras for 7-0.

Back came Hertfordshire with their talismanic fly-half (and coach), James Shanahan, one of those late changes to their squad, the 39 year-old former Cornish Pirate and Plymouth Albion star showed that he is still an outstanding talent at this level as he threw an outrageous dummy to score a try which Bishop's Stortford's Tom Banks converted to level the scores.

It was the home side who regained the lead with Joe Elderkin putting in Lewis Vinnicombe, with Matt Shepherd converting once more.

Notman made it 19-7 before Bishop's Stortford full-back Pierre Dotta scored a crucial five pointer, which Banks converted before the break to reduce Cornwall's lead to 19-14 at half-time.

The opening of the second half was particularly edgy for the crowd of over 3,000 at Camborne with Richard Brown barrelling over after a catch and drive. Hertfordshire replied with James Apperley. Tom Banks' conversion cut Cornwall's lead to just three points.

But cometh the hour, cometh the Black and Gold and, with Hertfordshire down to fourteen men, Sam Matavesi grabbed his second of the afternoon, with Shepherd converting for this one, and for Lewis Vinnicombe's second which followed shortly afterwards. Cornwall added a seventh try for the afternoon when Camborne favourite Dave Mankee dotted down on his home patch with Shepherd converting.

Hertfordshire had the final say through Sam Lunnon and Banks' fourth successful conversion.

Cornwall, with George Jones and Grant Randlesome prominent once more will be at Twickenham next Sunday. Kick-off for the big game is midday.

There will be a gathering of Cornish supporters at 'The Cabbage Patch' pub in Twickenham (opposite the station) from 10am for “Choir Practice”. The pub will also have pasties sourced from the Duchy available and Cornish ale and cider will also be on sale there all day.
