Following the publication of Dave Jenkin's photograph of Penryn School's football team from 60 years ago, we have received a picture of Helston School football team from the same year.

Joss Bray, who many years later set up the thriving Wendron youth section, saw the photograph and submitted this lovely old picture.

He said: "The photograph submitted by Dave Jenkin brought back many memories.

"In particular I remember going to Falmouth Rugby Club, where the goals were metal frame work and had to be moved into position to commence the game.

"The Penryn under-14 team had a number of players who were still eligible for the under-13 age group and these included David Jenkin, Andy Hughes, Derek Hocking and David (Joe) Burley. Joe was remarkable in that he played for Falmouth First Team at the age of 15, when most of the other players came from Plymouth."

Joss added that in the same season 1957/58, Helston under-13s played their talented Penryn rivals in the West Cornwall Cup Final. The match was played at Constantine and after a close encounter, Helston emerged with a 2-1 victory. The photo shows Kenyon League winners, Helston S.M. Under 12’s, the majority of whom played in the under-13 Cup Final.

Gary Howells, who played for the Cornwall Senior team, was also the player manager when St Keverne won the Cornwall Junior Cup.

The Sports Master, Harold Rickard, was a Helston legend, who represented Cornwall, England at amateur level and had trials with Arsenal.
