Helford River Sailing Club racers have been honing their skills in breezy conditions before the combined Laser Open and Open Regatta both on Sunday, July 2.

Weather allowing, St Mawes SC hope to return with their youth RS Feva and Laser 4.7 fleets by bravely sailing across Falmouth Bay before mixing it with Helford’s youth for the teen friendly racing.

The South West Laser Association’s Benjamin Flower has invited Helford to open its waters for the first time to Laser Class racing for Standard Radial and 4.7 racers, so those not carving it up at Hayling Island can look forward to keen competition under the watchful eye of Grafham Water’s former commodore and RO Tom Smith.

In addition to the Youth and Laser Class fleets, the club is looking forward to receiving entries in the open PY Handicap section.

A diverse fleet will be raced under average lap rules such that a Topper might complete a couple of laps in the same time it takes Roger McDonald's Dart 18 to do half a dozen. Racing begins at noon with three 40 minute races and is easily watched all around the mouth of the river from Trebah to Toll.

Details of the July event can be found at helfordriversc.co.uk. There will be a restaurant barbecue and bar open all day.
