Gyllyngvase Surf life Saving Club have been crowned Nipper champions for the third year in a row after two days of brilliant performances at Portreath Beach.

Of the 14 clubs competing, Gyllyngvase SLSC finished over 100 points ahead of the second placed Holywell Bay SLSC, with St Ives SLSC in third place.

Club chairman Matthew Stone said: "It was a fantastic result. I’m so proud of all our nippers and the result reflects the dedication of the competitors and the coaching team."

The events are all based around the skills that lifeguards use to carry out rescues in the sea. They include swim and board races, sprints, endurance running, relay events and flags, a discipline that tests the reactions of competitors.

There were some outstanding performances over the weekend, notably within the Golden Nipper, which consists of a consecutive swim, board and run.

Anya Hocking took the gold medal in the 12 year old girls' race and Harry Polkinghorne claimed gold in the 12 year old boys race. In total the team claimed 78 individual medals with the performances of all team members helping to secure the overall title.

Gylly’s nipper coach, Matthew Trebilcock, added: "Well done to all club members, I’m extremely proud of you all. There were so many excellent performances, and it was so much fun.

"Thank you to everyone who has helped so much towards this result, all the coaches, the committee and helpers, without you none of this would have been possible."

Gyllyngvase SLSC has more than 150 members from nippers all the way up to masters.

There are a number of sessions throughout the week for all ages and the club regularly trains in surf on north coast beaches to test the lifeguarding skills of its members.
