Falmouth 25, Burnham-on-Sea 5

Falmouth secured their third win in a row in horrendous conditions against Burnham-on-sea in the Tribute Western Counties West league.

Tribute man of the match Justyn Irons’ six penalties and a Nick Carne try helped secure the victory for the eagles.

Director of Rugby Graham Whitmore said: “We forced the errors and the turnovers and as a result of that we controlled the field positions which was a key factor today with the conditions.”

Falmouth began the scoring early in the 2nd minute after a Burnham knock on gave Irons the opportunity to score his first penalty of the game, which he did to take the scores to 3-0.

The Eagles doubled their lead in the 13th minute, Irons again with a penalty after the Burnham defence failed to roll away from a ruck.

Burnham got themselves on the board in the 26th minute through a Louie Ward try, after Thomas Spiller lost his footing and allowed the fly half to run through just right of the posts. Ward missed the conversion meaning Falmouth still led 6-5.

Only fair minutes later and Falmouth put another three points on the board, Irons again with a converted penalty from 15 metres out which made it 9-5.

Five minutes from half-time and Falmouth scored their first try after Nick Carne broke a hole in the away side’s defence before passing to the onrushing Thomas Job who stepped coolly passed the Burnham full-back before scoring under the posts. Irons converted to make it 16-5.

Two minutes before the break, Falmouth went down to 14, after Ashley Searle was deemed offside from a Burnham tap and go.

Irons missed a penalty straight after half time, however made amends soon after and converted his next two penalties to make the scored read 22-5.

Burnham came close to scoring again in the 52nd minute, however the away side couldn’t ground the ball after Job got under the ball to prevent the try.

The Eagles rounded off the game in the 79th minute, Irons again with a converted penalty from 30 metres which made the final tally read 25-5.
