Falmouth Town 4, Torridgeside 1

AN EXPLOSIVE opening half an hour ensured that Town made serene progress into the quarter-finals of the Walter C Parson League Cup on Saturday.

Three goals in 26 minutes underlined their superiority against a north Devon team that they had never met before in any competition.

Town took the lead after 12 minutes when the oustanding Marcello Jones linked up with striker partner Jordan Annear, whose low shot squirmed under the body of keeper Adam Williams.

Harry McMellon then produced a stunning fingertip save to divert Sam Fishwicke's fine effort on to the crossbar, before Town doubled their lead midway through the half.

Ollie Walker made a fine run to the byline, eluding his marker before hoisting a left footed cross on to the head of Luke Brabyn, whose firm downward header went in via the legs of a defender.

Three minutes later Jones and Annear produced a stunning one-two inside the area and Jones' slotted home the return pass as Falmouth threatened to run riot.

Torridgeside edged their way back into the game and after McMellon could only parry Rory Paine's shot, Jamie Bright ought to have converted the rebound but shot wide.

Town boss Andrew Westgarth had made all three substitutions within the hour, resting players ahead of tomorrow night's SWPL Premier trip to Sticker.

With 22 minutes to go, a pin-point clearance from McMellon sent Jones away and he produced a sublime finish, clipping the ball low past Williams' left hand to put Falmouth out of sight at 4-0.

The visitors did grab a consolation through Rob Holland before McMellon raced off his line to deny Bright in the dying moments.
