Falmouth Town 5, Penzance 1

FALMOUTH cruised into the last eight of the Cornwall Senior Cup after another display of ruthless finishing at Bickland Park on Saturday.

Jordan Annear and Marcello Jones’ devastating strike partnership was in evidence again, with both men notching a brace against a Penzance side managed by former Falmouth Town players Mark Vercesi and Wayne Quinn.

Vercesi played the entire match at centre half, but was lucky to be on the field at the end after scything down Annear late in the game.

Annear was clear through on goal, albeit 40 yards out, but referee Ryan Cornelius issued a yellow card to the veteran.

By that stage Town were already in complete control, having reached half time 3-0 up thanks to some clinical goals.

They took the initiative after 15 minutes. Tom Annear spread a delightful ball out wide to Harry Clarke and he carried the ball to the byline and won a corner.

Annear crossed and when the Penzance defence failed to clear, defender James Ward adjusted his body to swivel and finish like a centre forward.

Three minutes later they doubled their lead when Jordan Annear found Marcello Jones on the edge of the penalty area and when keeper Dominic Angove inexplicably advanced from his line, Jones had the presence of mind to hoist it over him and into the empty net.

Ed Wilton found some space in the area at the other end but his shot was half blocked, making an easy save for keeper Ryan Barnes.

Vercesi then fired just wide as Penzance enjoyed their best spell of the match, before Town hit them with a sucker punch.

Clarke produced an audacious back heel on the left hand touchline to take two defenders out of play, allowing Jordan Annear to race clear and slot past Angove with all the confidence of a man who had already scored 24 goals this season.

The game was all but over after 41 minutes.

Shortly after the break the visitors replied when Finn Robinson’s cross was diverted past Barnes by Paul Robertson, before the Annear brothers each had an effort saved by Angove at the other end.

The hosts restored their three-goal cushion after 64 minutes.

Josh Richards, who had been moved into midfield from right back, worked tirelessly to win the ball in his own half and found Clarke, who had drifted in-field.

He spotted a typical run from Jordan Annear, who outpaced the defence for a second goal which bore a striking resemblance to his first.

Ollie Walker replaced Tom Annear moments later and he provided the assist for Falmouth’s fifth, crossing for Jones to convert from close range at the back post.

Wilton shot into the side netting and then headed just wide as Penzance continued to look for a second consolation goal, but by then Town were already out of sight.
