The Cornish Sharks American football team has been given a massive boost this week as legendary coach John Aska has joined the team.

John is famous for being one of the founding members of the London Ravens, one of the best American football teams to play in Britain, as well as boasting an impressive playing career.

He helped the team to two British championships in the 1980s as well as representing Great Britain between 1985 and 1987 as a line backer.

Coach, Brian Smallworth, is delighted with the appointment and looks forward to working alongside John.

"I have known John for many years having played and coached against him. I am delighted he has agreed to share his knowledge and experience and I know his passion will inspire the next generation of players in Cornwall."

Also returning for another year with the Sharks is offensive line coach is Nigel Hoyte.

Nigel knows John well having both been at the London Ravens and coach Smallworth is excited to see whether the two men can bring success to Cornwall.

“I am delighted to welcome back my friend and Coach Nigel Hoyte who has been part of this organization for some 10 years now. He will bring so much to our offensive line and I will appreciate his knowledge and support which he has demonstrated for many years.”

Smallworth is also keen to encourage anyone who wants to get involved with the sport to come and give it a go before the start of the upcoming season.

“It doesn’t matter whether you have played before or not, you have great coaches to teach you the game.”

“We are also looking for people who enjoy the game but who don’t play or coach who could support us in all areas of running and managing the club, so please get in touch if you’d like to be part of it.”

Training for the Sharks takes place every Sunday at Redruth Albany Rugby Club playing ground between 1pm and 3:30pm.
