Falmouth II 1, Penzance 2

FALMOUTH’s second team came close to shocking unbeaten Trelawney Division 1 leaders Penzance but ultimately fell to a narrow defeat at Penryn College on Saturday, writes Matt Friday.

Sarah Thomas gave Penzance an early lead before Alice Bowman levelled the scores, but Morwenna Laurie’s second half strike was enough to preserve the visitors’ perfect record this season.

Penzance have won all 18 of their league games in 2017-18, and were on their way to number 19 on six minutes when they were awarded a penalty flick, which Thomas sent into the top corner.

The visitors were beginning to show their superiority but Falmouth equalised against the run of play in the 22nd minute when Bowman turned her marker and fired low into the goal.

Determined to keep their 100 per cent record intact, Penzance continued to threaten with Falmouth goalie June Moore having to save two efforts while Evie Roberts did well to block another.

Falmouth had their own chances to take the lead, with Bowman being denied twice by the Penzance goalkeeper in the final minutes of the first half.

The hosts continued on the front foot after half-time, and almost went in front when Bella Osman broke through the defence but her shot was well saved.

However it was the league leaders who scored the all-important next goal in the 48th minute when Thomas’ pass reached Laurie who found the corner with her strike.

The aforementioned duo had chances to extend their side’s lead, but Laurie flashed her shot across goal before Thomas struck the post with her effort.

Bowman and Molly Phillips both came close late on as Falmouth searched for an equaliser. Their efforts were in vain but this was a spirited display from the home side.
